Back to School

Back to School

Recently, I began a new journey in my life. I made the decision to go back to school. I chose to begin a family after high school and put my education on hold. My children are at the age now where they do not require my undivided attention. This has been a colossal learning experience. I have found it to be extremely challenging, yet incredibly stimulating. I will discuss my preferred learning style and explain how that style connects with my personality traits. I will also discuss my strengths, weaknesses, and how I they both effect my life. After that, I will give details about my plan to be successful in college and beyond. Finally, I will close with my thoughts and feelings about this course and how it will benefit my in the remainder on my college career.

My Learning Profile

My learning profile is that of a "hands-on" person. During the first week of the class, I learned a great deal about myself. I am a kinetic learner; I learn by direct experience. It seems to be much easier to see something in front of me. I am one who longs to see the final product. I demand results. At times, my attention span and patience is short I tend to get bored when reading books.

Since I am an extrovert, I learn through group forums and contact with colleagues I have also been an outgoing person. I have worked in various positions that required me to interact with people. These traits are typical of my character. During my reading and research in this course, I can be classified as a "director". I find myself showing and telling others how to and what to do. I also feel this will be helpful in my future.

My Strengths

I once was employed by a public utility service. In my position, I was responsible for payment arrangement for consumers who had fallen on hard times and needed extra time to pay their bill. One of the strengths I possess that helped me tremendously in that position is my strong customer service skills. I am a very sociable person; therefore, I found it easy to do my job. I dealt with many different types of people in that line of work. By the time consumers reached my desk, they had already exhausted all other means and had there guard up, in fear of having their utilities disconnected. This is where another of my strengths prevailed. I can solve most problems with a little research. This is not only my first online course; it is my first college course. I am new to the entire system. Therefore, I had to decipher most of the material by myself. I now know where to look online to ask for help. With hard work and perseverance, I will succeed.

My Challenges

One thing I struggle with every day is patience. I am not the most tolerant person on Earth. I have a tendency to rush people along. Sometimes that poses a problem in online class because you have to wait for your classmates to finish their assignments before you can complete your own. My family has told me that I suffer for Adult Attention Deficit Disorder. Being a mother of two girls is not an easy task. At times, my husband is taking one of them to practice on the North side of town and I am taking the other to an appointment on the South side of town. If I were a little more organized, I would not find myself in such predicaments. During my employment at the utility company, I would find myself trying to be n complete control of every collection account that came to the office. I had an exceptionally hard time delegating to other employees. This goes back to my learning style. I will admit that I am very aggressive. During certain situations, one may not consider being aggressive a weakness. As I stated before, I put my education on hold to start my family. Consequently, I have had little time to broaden my horizons. Facing challenges are a part of everyday life.
