Base Jumping

Specific Purpose: To educate the audience on BASE jumping and what they need to do before they are able to participate in the sport.

Thesis: Before you can participate in the sport of BASE-jumping three things you have to do are: complete 150 skydives, receive direct qualified instruction on BASE equipment, its maintenance, its packing, and its use, & you should receive direct qualified instruction on the techniques of BASE jumping.

Introduction:

Attention Getter: Has anyone in here ever been told to go jump off a cliff, or heard that phrase before? Well I am going to give you a whole new perspective on that phrase!

Thesis: There are three things you must do before you can begin your first BASE jump though. One, complete 150 skydives (diving out of a plane). Two, receive direct qualified instruction on BASE equipment, its maintenance, its packing, and its use. Three, you should receive direct qualified instruction on the techniques of BASE jumping.

Preview: I am going to let you in on everything you need to know about skydiving, and how it leads you BASE jumping. First by explaining the levels you have to go through to skydive solo, then how much experience you need before you can BASE jump.

I. Completing 150 skydives can't be done over night, there are several levels you have to go through before you can even dive on your own.

A. Your first few times you should do tandems.

1. In my own experience, I have gone on two tandems.

2. A tandem skydive is the recommended introduction to skydiving.

B. There are three levels of tandem progression.

1. Level one is designed to introduce you to the positions & freefall turns. (Daisher 2003)

2. Level 2 provides you with the opportunity to be in control. (Daisher 2003)

3. During level 3, you will be introduced to advanced movements. (Daisher 2003)

C. After your last tandem, you graduate on to Accelerated Free Fall (AFF).

1. You will begin your training with an intensive ground.

2. After completing your ground school, you will be assigned two Accelerated Freefall Certified Jump Masters

3. Following these steps, you will complete levels two through seven. (Dedijer 146)

Transition: After completing your jumps, you are ready to move on and talk to an experienced instructor about learning the basics of BASE jumping.
