Why do people bully?

Causes of bullying could be cultural because some cultures are enthralled with winning, violence, and power. There is a high rate of domestic violence because some young people witness this growing up in the home and figure it’s an acceptable way to get what they want. If the place whether it be school, home or workplace does not have a tolerance policy in place bullying might be more prevalent and influence on why people bully.

Social issues are another concern because a bully might feel they get more recognition from bullying than if they didn’t bully. Reality television and real life situations show acting out is more recognized than if someone acts civil and courteous. People bully because they are jealous or envious of a person or lack social or personal skills.

Some families aren’t loving and warm like others, those feelings aren’t shared at home this can result in a child who bullies because they aren’t taught that feelings can be hurt if you act out towards another person in a negative, hurtful way. Inconsistent monitoring of children in the home and inconsistent discipline are atmospheres that are prone to producing bullies.

Many children who experience social rejection themselves are more likely to treat others that way. Academic failure also plays a factor in bullying.

Consequences of Bullying

Researchers have found a link between bullying and depression. Both bullies and their victims are more likely to suffer from depression than people who are not involved in bullying at all. The depression can last into adulthood. Other problems like anxiety, physical illness, low self esteem and high rates of school absence are also common in victims of bullies. Teens who commit suicide are often depressed and we cannot rule out bullying be a factor in that depression. Victims of cyber bullying are more likely to suffer from suicidal thoughts as well as low self esteem.
