Bush and the Supreme Court

A lot of things have been happening in the world in the past few weeks that have reflected on Bushes rating. Many of the things for an example high gas prices, stuff in Iraq, and the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina have weekend the President politically. Though Bush has low ratings he still has a few things going for him. At first he had a chance to pick who will fill a seat as a Supreme Court Justice. Now he has the opportunity to pick someone to be a Chief Justice. Bush has a chance to reshape the Supreme Court. He now has the power to have the court lean right to his advantage but he needs to find a way to keep the courts balanced like how it's always been, at the same time keep everyone happy with whom he chooses. In having to make the right decision this can make or break Bush.

Just a month ago in July Sandra Day O'Conner sent a retirement letter to the President. The reason for leaving was to spend more time with her husband. She had closed the letter by saying that her retirement would be effected upon the conformation of her successor. The President now had to make his first decision as to who was going to take O'Conner's place as a Supreme Court justice. At first he had chosen John G. Roberts Jr. as the Supreme Court justice. Roberts was soon to be drilled by the senate to see if he would make an adequate Supreme Court Justice.

Weeks later the decision for Roberts to become a Supreme Court Justice has been changed. This decision had a little to do with Chief Justice William Rehnquist's death. Rehnquist had died on Sept. 3, 2005, LA Times said on Sept. 4, 2005. Rehnquist's death was bound to happen because of his long battle with thyroid cancer. He was rushed to the hospital twice and at the second time he was sent to the hospital he admitted that he had no intentions of leaving the courts. Through his illness he was still on the job to complete his final term. A couple days later from Rehnquist's death Bush had then nominated Robert's as the nation's top judge.

Senate Democrats are preparing tougher questions for Roberts now that he has been nominated as chief justice. The President is also facing the senate judiary committee
