OBSERVATION ONE
This scenario occurred when I visited my friend Mitchell who has just married, and her husband David who comes from England (environment, Ch.1, pp8). I was greeted by the family (in-group, Ch.2, pp31) with hugs from Mitchell and handshake from David (gender, Ch.4, pp96). Mitchell hold my hands (touch, Ch.6, pp160) and walked to the sofa. I sat with Mitchell just only inches (proxemics, Ch.6, pp163). Mitchell asked me whether I would like some soft drinks and a cake and then went to kitchen although David is obviously near the kitchen (nurturing, Ch.2, pp39). I saw some photos of their honey-moon on the wall, and then this couple start to introduced their parents to me (identity, Ch.5, pp119). David said slowly when he talked with me because of my poor English, and his voice softened when he spoke to Mitchell (paralanguage, Ch.6, pp161). I listened with smile (silent listening, Ch.7, pp184) but I cannot remember everyone's name on the photo (information overload, Ch.7, pp179). During the conversation David told me a English joke, but I did not understand that, so I just kept silence while Mitchell was not comfortable and tried to make new topic (cultural influences, Ch.4, pp97). Later, Mitchell told me she really miss her parents, I nodded (kinesics, Ch.6, pp158) and told her I really understand and sometimes have the same feeling as her feeling as hers (empathizing, Ch.7, pp190). Mitchell seems really miss her family because she talked incessantly about it (stage hogs, Ch.7, pp180). At last I told Mitchell if I were her I would come back to China during holiday (advising, Ch.7, pp195).
OBSERVATION TWO
The following scenario occurred when my little sister named Phoebe came for holiday with me from Melbourne and we go shopping together in David Jones (environment, Ch.1, pp8). Phoebe tried to find a party-dress for her graduation, but she cannot speak English very well, so she anticipated that she might not express clearly to the saleswoman, and when she talked to the sales she really did not explain it clearly (self-fulfilling prophecy, Ch.3, pp66). Phoebe and I walked to shoppe for party-dress, and one saleswoman walked to us and look at us with a friendly smile (face and eyes, Ch.6, pp158). Then Phoebe came to her and described the style of the dress that she wanted to the saleswoman with some gestures (kinesics, Ch.6, pp158). When Phoebe talked with the saleswoman I listened carefully about the whole conversation between them because I thought Phoebe might probably ask me for help (selection, Ch.4, pp86). Then The saleswoman asked more details (questioning, Ch.7, pp184) and restated the style of the dress that Phoebe described (paraphrasing, Ch.7, pp188), then phoebe's shake her head as puzzled (emblems, Ch.6, pp152). Then I advised Phoebe to make her meaning shortly and clearly or just find a picture in magazine and showed it to the saleswoman (advising, Ch.7, pp195). On our way home, Phoebe complained that she is getting fatter and fatter (relative word, Ch.5, pp129), and I put my hand on her shoulder (touch, Ch.6, pp160) and told her do not worry about this, it is all because she sleeps too much in this holiday (analyzing, Ch.7, pp194). and then I pauses (paralanguage, Ch.6, pp161) and said maybe we both can go to gym this week(advising, Ch.7, pp195). She didn't respond me so I thought she must being considering my suggestion (inference, Ch.5, pp136).
OBSERVATION THREE
The next scenario occurred during my birthday dinner at my home with my friends Owen, Dennis, Cindy, Rita, Tracy and her
