Chapter: The Cyclops
The Setting: The Cyclops cave
Conflict: Polyphemus is a huge man who eats humans.
Complications: They are trapped in the cave of the Cyclops and the only one who can open the door is Polyphemus.
Climax: Odysseus and his men stab him in the eye and when morning came to let the sheep in to the pasture they held on to the belly.
Denouement: The men escape two men were eaten.
Character: Polyphemus who was the one-eyed monster son of Poseidon.
Archetype: Polyphemus is a shadow character.
Chapter: The Witch Circe
The Setting: Aeolia
Conflict: Circe a young goddess.
Complications: Circe gives them a magic potion and puts them in a pig sty
Climax: Hermes gives Odysseus a plant that will weaken Circe
Denouement: Odysseus overcomes here magic and frees his men. She persuades them to stay and they feast with her and after many seasons’ leaves.
Character: Aeolus the god of wind puts all the stormy winds in a bag so they don’t hurt the Ithicans.
Archetype: Circe is a shape shifter first being a foe and later becoming a friend. Hermes is a Herald assisting with the plant that helps defeat Circe
Chapter: The Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis
The Setting: Ocean
Conflict: Sirens who are beautiful women who sing an enchanting song. Scylla a monstrous beast with twelve legs and six heads. Charybdis who lurks below the water and causes great maelstroms.
Complications: Getting past all the deathly tasks.
Climax: Scylla reaches down and grabs six men in her mighty mouth
Denouement: Most of the men made it out of the cave with the image of there comrades in the beasts’ mouth.
Character: Sirens, Charybdis, and the sirens
Archetype: All of the creatures were threshold guardians testing Odysseus.
