Children’s Hospital of San Diego is a non-profit organization with a mission “to restore, sustain and enhance the health and developmental potential of children (Children’s, 2005)”. As a nonprofit organization it is not prohibited from making a profit, but there are limitations on what it can do with its profits. There are also limitations on how it can make money-and it must be in accordance with its nonprofit purposes. Because of these limitations and regulations, various control mechanisms are used to ensure the proper collection and distribution of funding.
The Research Center at Children’s Hospital and Health Center was formed in 1982 to administer federal funding for research in children’s health. Children’s Hospital Research Center includes the projects office, the Institutional Review Board, and the office for grants and contracts. The projects office monitors the flow of projects through the organization and ensures that all projects receive administrative, scientific and the appropriate ethical reviews. This group also evaluates projects for feasibility of implementation and monitors compliance with research policies and procedures. The office of grants and contracts assists investigators with application submissions to funding agencies as well as providing guidance and oversight of post-award expenditures. This group is also responsible for ensuring compliance with grants administration policy and procedures.
