Coaching & Mentoring
“Coaching & Mentoring” is one of extra-ordinary module run so far on UPH-PKU EMBA program. I found it becouse it has a very different approach and methodology. Especially for me who has an engineering background, it was very unique and exciting. It was like a journey, full of energy, system thinking, out of the box, being somewhere...
When I was guessing before the processes, think it during the process, and reflect it again after the process, I have found some wild significant new ideas and concepts from this module:
- Take off your shirt
“If you want to start everything, make it as natural as possible. Take off your formal clothes if necessary until you feel comfortable and “fit in you”.
- The World cafe
Seems “light and small” at the beginning, but I realize that was a great way to start everything. Just “talk” something and “flow” it to the nature.
- There are so many reason why people want to do something include “work”. And offcourse also why they need to perform well or not. People may say it is about salary, challenge, environment or even boss. The key is, the more we know ourself the more we can go to the top or deepest passion.
- Coaching & mentoring, is about “giving” someone skills with the tools, exercise and excell with that and suceed. You can be a good coach and mentor. The different is a coach is more like a trainer whom someone has to follow your instruction to get a spesific goals in a certain period of time. You can be hired with someone as a coach. You may get a fee from the service. In other side, mentoring is about “giving some “a way to pass the bridge”. You cannot declare as a mentor. A mentor is “choosen" by someone. They will find their own way to finally recognozed and choosing you.
- All brain side (left and right) utilization. In my point of view, all side of our brain should be explore and utilize optimally. Each of them has a spesific task and function. They need to grow well so we can use it properly. After learning this segment of brain I believe the statement said “In your left brain, there is nothing right and in your right brain there is nothing left”. Meaning, in your left brain, everything assumed to be wrong at the beginning until you can prove it. And you will carry everything in your right brain, no matter it is right or wrong.
Frankly, this mental model is a new one who comes facing my knowledge. It is a new consciousness states we have to start from our self to becoming successful with other people. In my experience as a coach and mentor, so many times happened that I was dealing with other persons and I forced it to my own game. I push it to what I want, what I need and what I like. In fact, I create my own story with that. People cannot live with it. We have to understand them first before they understand us. As we know that we all have our own perspective in this life. We live on our own culture and belief. Sometimes or even frequently, “the war” started with this firewall concept.
But, I do believe, by changing our perspective, we can change the behavior and finally change the consequences. It is not a simple word to change the perspective, but I believe by practicing day by day, we can simply move to many perspectives we want in a certain circumstances. Our basic dispositions are a resource, not a curse. And above all, we can spin our own personal stories to see our lives in a better light.
I believe it is also happen in coaching and mentoring. You have to be aware and understand yourself before other. I call it “Inside out games”. Know yourself first then you will know your partner in family, fellow or job as well. It is not an easy game indeed, but that is the way it is. We cannot play around with that, otherwise people will reject our approach, will not listening our persuasion, will hard to deal with situation and finally we are going to deep stress facing a hard rock wall.
