Cold Sassy Tree

Cold Sassy Tree

Chapter 30 starts with Will and Miss. Love talking in the kitchen about why Queenie drinks out of a jar instead of a normal cup. Will thinks that she does because she told him that the first cup is always the best so a big jar makes a big first glass. Miss Love points out to Will that Quennie is just saying that because black people are not supposed to eat or drink off of the people they work fours stuff. They go on talking about the horse that Wills grandpa got for her and how much she likes it. As the chapters go on more drama starts happening. Will went to see his aunt to tell her he was sorry for making up all of the stories he did, and for her to yell at him he wanted her to. When he got there she grabbed him and took him inside. He thought she was mad at him but it turned out that her husband had painted the mantel and not taken any thing off. He left a coach roach , a button, and he left a match box up there and just painted around it. She was furious at him and would take it off because she wanted him to remember what he had done. When they got to talking about the stories that Will made up she stated laughing and said they were the best stories that she ad ever heard. She had an idea. She went in to the other room and brought him out a book. It was empty, and she told him that he was going to be a wrier. She told him to write down all the stories he thought of. He told her he didn’t want to be a writer he wanted to be a framer. She blew off what he said and made him take it. Will started writing down everything that happened in his family and called it his journal. He looks back and is glad that he has the journal because now he can look back and remember what all happened to there family during the next couple weeks of his childhood. His dad was supposed to go to New York and pick up for the family store and he was going to take Wills mom if she would decide to go. She didn’t really want to go because she didn’t want the town to talk since her mom had just died. Will and his dad talk her in to going though and she is so ready to do. The day after she decides to go Wills grandpa came to the house and told his mama that he was going to take Love to New York because she would be good at choosing stuff for the store. His mom didn’t say any thing about how she decided on going she just said ok and went to her room to cry. Will went to see Love and told her about how his mom had decided to go and that his grandpa was telling her she couldn’t anymore. Love acted like she was sorry and said well I don’t have to go your mom should. As it turned out Love got to go and Wills mom got left behind. The good thing that came out of this is that Wills dad went out and bought his mom a car. It was the first one in Cold Sassy. She was so happy that she for got about the trip. While Love and grandpa were in New York, Love sent post cards to all of the women in Cold Sassy telling them about a cute outfit that would look great on them and making them all happy about what they could get when Love got back. This not only made the store get good business but made the people of Cold Sassy like her again for a while. Will learned how to drive the car and was taking stuff to one of there neighbors one day when he saw Lightfoot and yelled at her to come look at the car. She was so happy to see him and was glad that she got to see a car up close. They started talking and she told him about how her dad had died. How she had to work in the mill full time so she could stay living there. He asked her is she wanted a ride and she said yes. He pulled in to the cemetery so that he could talk to her for a while before he went to take the goods and her home. As they sat there they started looking around. Lightfoot noticed the head stone of an angel and asked Will who was buried there. Will told her no one was there that a guy married a Jewish girl and his mom disowned him. That was the sign that she disowned him. Lightfoot got mad at this. She said that it wasn’t fair that they could put up a headstone for someone who wasn’t even dead, and when her dad died all they could do was burry him in the mountains. They couldn’t afford a fancy head stone for him. After she said that she started crying. Will didn’t know what to do so he was hugging her then pulled her up and kissed her. They sat there kissing when one of the towns people came up on them. When she started telling at Will, Lightfoot took off.
