College Writing Movie Genres

Movies have been the center of American culture for decades, as well as around the world. It brings people together, and serves as entertainment. What do you do on a Friday night with friends when there is nothing else to do, you go see a movie, you go to movies on dates, and you go with family. Actors and actresses are talked about all the time. Movies bring people into conversations about if the movie was good or bad, or if the actor or actress did a good acting job. There are many, many different types of movies. They are called genres. Different genres of movies would be action, comedy, romance, suspense, science fiction, horror and many others. As said in the article Genre and Myth, “Genres are distinguished by a characteristic set of conventions in style, subject matter, and values.” This article talks about the different genres of movies and the way movies have different stories to each on them. It is also a way of conveniently focusing and organizing the story materials. It is true that different genres are focused to attract the attention of different audiences. New age films are directed towards teens, action-adventure is set towards males, and romance movies are for the female audience.

By making my own genre of a movie it will make it stand out than the basic genres. People would recognize what movies fit this genre. Thinking of a few movies that all have something in common brings me to one movie genre that I particularly enjoy which is historical action drama. A couple examples of historical action drama could be “The Patriot” with Mel Gibson or “Gladiator” with Russell Crowe. There are thousands of movies that could be under the genre, action. But there are only a few selections of historical action. A movie that fits this genre would be “The Last Samurai” with Tom Cruise. Historical action is a movie that is based on events that happened in a past like the American Revolution or Ancient Rome. But the movies that take place hundreds of years ago have a lot of bloody, violent parts with many action scenes. The movie also contains parts that have a real touching edge to it and would make you sad at some points in the movie.

“The Last Samurai” with Tom Cruise is about an American War Captain who trains and lead's a group of Japanese soldiers to defeat a rebellion of Japan’s remaining Samurai. Cruise is captured by the Samurai and soon becomes part of the village he is being held hostage in and finds that his true warrior of the samurai is coming out as he trains to become one with the people he once called his enemies. Soon, the Japanese forces begin to search for the Samurai again. Ready to begin a war with them that will soon determine the fate of Japanese traditions, and their lives. In the movie Tom Cruise grows a relationship with a woman from the village he is in and he becomes best of friends with one of the samurais who captured him and in the beginning hated each other. The scenes in the movie of him living among the samurais create so much drama. At the end of the movie he fights with the Samurais against the Japanese soldiers he was training and the American soldiers he was allies with. The
