Excel Basic Lesson #4: Getting Started

  1. Excel 2013 is a Spreadsheet Program that allows you to organize, store, and analyze information. (1 point)[pic 2]

  1. Identify and describe the following areas in an Excel spreadsheet using the image above. (10 points)
  1. Quick Access Toolbar: Lets you access common commands.
  2. Command Group: Each group has a series of different commands. Use the arrow to see even more commands that group offers.
  3. Name Box: Displays the location, or name, of a selected cell.
  4. Formula Bar: You can enter or edit data, a formula, or a function that will appear in a certain cell.
  5. Column: A group of cells that runs from the top of the page to the bottom. They are identified by letters.
  6. Cell: Each rectangle in a workbook. A cell is the intersection of a row and a column.
  7. Row: A group of cells that runs from the left of the page to the right. Rows are identified by numbers.
  8. Worksheets: Each workbook holds one or more worksheets. These are also known as spreadsheets.
  9. Worksheet View Options: Normal view is selected by default, and shows you an unlimited number of cells and columns. Page Layout view divides a spreadsheet into pages. Page break view lets you see an overview of your worksheet, which is especially helpful when adding page breaks.
  10. Vertical and Horizontal Scroll Bars: These allow you to see more than is showed on the screen by scrolling.

  1. The Ribbon and the Quick Access Toolbar are where you will find the commands you need to do common tasks in Excel. (2 points)
  2. The Ribbon contains multiple tabs, each with several groups of commands. You can add your own tabs that contain your favorite commands. (2 points)
  3. Backstage View gives you various options for saving, opening a file, printing, or sharing your document. (2 points)

  : Return to Excel: You can use the arrow to close backstage view.

Info: The info pane contains information about the current workbook. You can also inspect the workbook and set protection controls.

New: You can create a new, blank workbook, or choose from many templates.

Save/Save as: You can save your workbook to your computer or to your OneDrive.

Print: You can change the print settings and print your workbook. You can also see a preview of your workbook.

Share: You can invite people to view and collaborate on your workbook. You can also share your workbook by emailing it as an attachment.

Export: You can choose to export your work in another formant such as PDF/XPS or a different version of Excel.

Account: You can access your Microsoft account information, modify your theme and background, and sign out of your account.

Options: Here you can change different Excel options. You can change the Quick Analysis options, AutoRecover settings, or Language preferences.
