Crazy Definition

There are some words in the English language that tie together so many meanings when a few letters are strung together. One of those words is crazy. A proper definition of crazy is "mentally deranged, senseless, [and] insane" (Dictionary). Some interesting synonyms for crazy are cracked, barmy, kooky, moonstruck, and nuts (Thesaurus). However, these simple approaches to this complex word do not effectively give a clear enough picture of what this word can really mean. Crazy is a word with a wide variety of meanings, but the three most common uses are associated with mental illness, something extremely disturbing, and in reference to something intensely positive in a fun and exciting way.

One way to define crazy is as a way to describe a person who suffers from some kind of mental illness. A crazy person is someone who acts in a way that seems weird to the rest of the world. This type of person may appear frightening to the rest of the world who does show such behavior. Though there are countless examples of crazy behavior out there, some include hearing voices that are not really there, acting in an unnecessarily violent manner, or lacking the proper social skills to get along with the rest of the world. One well-known crazy person in Romeoville is the old man who walks up and down the roads, picks up road kill, and then takes it home for dinner. This way of defining crazy has very negative ideas connected to it, but it is not the only way to think of the word.

A second way to define crazy is commonly used by people to refer to something that is horribly messed up in a weird and twisted way. It is not uncommon for people to witness something that is memorable to them for disturbing reasons. A horrible car accident in which several cars were involved, causing a tremendous amount of damage, and creating a situation in which traffic was backed up for miles could be said to be crazy.
