Denardin Chocolate
Ethic Assignment
Shelby Fife
Chocolate is a major consumer good. As consumers, we often do not think about where or how the products we buy are produced. Farmers are using slave labor to harvest coco beans. Many workers are forced to work for little or no pay. Many women have lost their children. Who is to blame for this? I believe that the farmers are responsible. I believe that the farmers are responsible because they are the ones recruiting the workers, they can ask for a higher price, and it logical to correct the problem where it starts.
The farmers are taking the children away to work on their farms. They are making the choice to do this to people. Employers are responsible for the people who work for them. They have a responsibility to pay their employees and establish good working conditions. Child labor should not be used. They are taking away children’s childhoods. The farmers will have to find adult workers. Considering the economic conditions of the region, they should not have a hard time finding workers.
The farmers can pay their workers decent wages by raising their prices. If every farmer does this then the manufactures will be forced to accept the higher price. The manufactures will raise their price and consumers will have to pay more for chocolate. The only people who will be happy over the higher prices are the farm workers.
