Dna-Unit 2 Documentary Response
DNA-Unit 2 Documentary Response (1000 words)
In my documentary response I will analyse and evaluate how reading the play-text DNA and carrying out 6 practical lessons has helped to develop my understanding and knowledge of the play’s characters, themes and plot. The play written in a contemporary style through the way in which Dennis Kelly has included naturalistic speaking styles. The play looks at the themes of gangs, friendship, crime and murder. These themes are relevant because a group of children thought they killed a boy and covered-up their traces and also the other members of that group just followed one leader and that also can link to gangs.
As a class we read and analysed the play-text, initially I found the play-text difficult to follow due to the Meta text used. However though my practical exploration I was able to understand how Dennis Kelly has used this style of text to create a naturalistic narrative.
In Workshop 1 we explored using an object and how it linked to the play. My object was a plastic bag and the word that we pick to go whit the object was ‘killed’ as at the end of the play DNA Phill as control over the group and acutely they didn’t kill; Phill get Cathyin to put the plastic bag over Adams head to murder him as this links to the theme murder and crime as there have the change to make every think better but they didn’t and that’s the link to murder and crime is where the group was all in the idea of killing Adam as they joined in the act. As I was playing John Tate in the role play, I used the power of religion as he did in the play, we used the bag to show that Adam had no power to rip the bag off his face as he was weak and confused. Someone else’s group’s object was a rope and their word to show the link between the object and the play was ‘control’. This relates to the play because the rope suggests that the group is all stuck together and also the rope keeps the group members in their place.
Our still image had 3 people on one side and 1 on the other side, as it show space and power; one person standing alone and strong versus the weaker group who had to support each other. The stimulus ‘spontaneous’ linked to the play by allowing to acted with more passion because our thoughts and actions came straight from the heart we expressed our anger towards Phill which had come about due to him always telling the other members what to do and what he will not do it himself as he does not want to get his own hands dirty, he always wonts the others to get in trouble and take the blame, this links to the theme of gangs and how the leader would hide way from the trouble as there’s no tell’ in who can just tell who did what as in the play. We showed the contrast between different characters, by are voices and the tone as if we was in there place and tried to show the charters feelings thought there voice and showed are movement how the charterer you was playing would of acted like and used, the role thought the feeling we could of make the charter feel; sad or happy and in the play-text they could of felt the opposite to what he felt.
