Case 1.1: Drexler's World Famous Bar-B-Que
They say everything is bigger in Texas; apparently this is the case when it comes to Bar-B-Queue. Drexler's World Famous Bar-B-Que is located in the heart of rib country, Houston's Third Ward. Drexler's is a family owned establishment which has utilized their secret family recipes since the late 1940's.
Drexler's is a small business and in as much enjoys the ability to react more quickly to change and implement cost saving or innovative strategies with more speed and fluidity. Conversely, Drexler's, being a small business, does limit the ability to mitigate losses when hard times hit. Mrs. Scott is the heart of the business and remains firm in her dedication to The community of the third ward. She manages her business with her values firmly ensconced on her sleeves which has made a meaningful impact on the area. After much deliberation a strategic decision was made to raze the roof of the current building that Drexler's operates in and a new and improved shell would be created ultimately enhancing the business by double its original capacity.
Drexler's has always been a family run establishment since the early 50's when an uncle of Mrs. Scott had taken over the business. Since that time her two sons had taken turns in the business. James has taken a position as a co-owner and Clyde, who was a basketball star in the NBA and at the University of Houston, has been assisting in the day to day operations.
1. What role do values play in how Drexel's Bar-B-Que interacts with its neighbors and customers?
Values at Drexler's are not only a descriptive of the way this particular organization handles day to day business, it encompasses the heart and soul of an operation dating back to its inception in the 1940's. Mrs. Scott's dedication to the third ward and her faith in God permeates through the establishment, which is rich with the effects of her hard work, honesty and a real sense of caring for the patrons that visit her quaint Bar-B-Que restaurant.
Drexler's considers itself to be in the neighborhood and of the neighborhood. Although the business was doing well they have decided not to move from the third ward which has made an impact on the economy of this particularly struggling section of Houston.
2. Is Drexler's and effective organization? Why?
Drexler's is uniquely positioned to be able to quickly and effectively alter and implement strategic business decisions due to the smaller size of its operation. Drexler's also efficiently leverages the history of its inception as a family owned establishment along with its adequate and specialized menu to keep customers loyal and satisfied.
