"Boom!" That's where it all started. I was in the backyard picking spices for my mother when the first shot was fired. It was a warm summer evening, but it was unusually quiet. During the summer, the birds are always chirping, the mosquitoes are buzzing frequently, and the villagers are usually roaming the streets, but tonight was different. Bolting into the hut, I find my mother packing our bags.

"Mother, are we going somewhere? Why are you packing?" I questioned, frightened.

"Arulou, look out the window," Mother answered. Floating on the horizon were twin, ginormous battleships! Etched in the side of the first was the terrifying name, Yomato. Emblazoned on the other was an equally horrid name, Japtanic. Recklessly, the Yomato fired! As I watched the capsule hurl towards us, I heard a deafening boom and saw a blinding flash. Moments later, I saw no more.

Finally, feeling came back, if only for a fleeting instant. All around me, explosions and gunshots filled the air. The lights went back out. Eventually, I found myself lying down in what I recognized as my neighbor's boat. As I look back toward the island, all that is visible are flames of the huts we used to call our homes.

Drifting aimlessly on the foaming surf, I couldn't help but look forward to where we were headed.
