Frankenstein

Essay # 4

There were a lot of Romantic elements in Frankenstein that Shelley used to demonstrate the novel’s themes. As we know the Romantics were big on not having any limitations or boundaries, and also being very imaginative and mystical.

One of the major themes in the story is the fact that Victor tries to play the role of God. First of all what is funny is that it is almost as if Victor isn’t even mature enough to be able to handle that responsibility let alone try to create life. One characteristic that supports this theme is the belief of having no limitations. Victor uses his imagination and refuses to have any limitations to how far he can go, and wants to create this life. Just the fact that Victor has the imagination of how to create this life and exactly what he wants to do with it just shows how much imagination that he has. After he creates it he doesn’t even take on the responsibility of what he has done. Also the fact that it is an unnatural thing to create life, was a huge thing and theme of this book because Romantics don’t like to follow the book, they like to use there imagination and mysticism.

Through out the book there are also many references to sublime moments, which is one thing that Romantics really like to write about. One reference to this would be when Victor notices the Monster that he created bounding from one mountain to another but only catches glimpses of him as the lightening strikes and makes the skies glow to the point that he can actually see that monster. There are many references through our the book to sublime moments.
