Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now: An Exploration of Darkness.
Describe the use of "darkness" both in the book's title and as a symbol throughout the text. What does darkness represent? Is its meaning constant or does it change?
Heart of Darkness translated very nicely into film with the help and structure of, director, Francis Ford Coppola. Apocalypse Now was one of the best movies in 1979 because of the adaptation they used. Coppola used the Vietnam War as the outward focal point of the story to provide it with relevance and he used Conrad's Heart of Darkness to provide structure. Heart of Darkness is a very fitting title for this book because it is metaphoric. Apocalypse Now as a movie title also has relevance, because the plot of the movie is basically a build up to an "apocalypse" of sorts. Darkness has a double meaning in both the book and the movie, which can be interpreted, as the journey into one's self and it is symbolic of the crew's journey into the jungle.
