How Personal Can Ethics Get?
Discuss how personal differences and preference can impact organizational ethics. Valerie, I would say is an ethical person. She is concerned not only about her employment and her status in the US, but the employment of her colleagues. She is concerned about what the impact of the knowledge she has about her boss, Mr. Waters could do to her and the rest of her co-workers. Telling the truth could mean that they would all lose their jobs with the company. Her boss on the other hand, I would assume only cares about himself.
If this knowledge was found out by someone outside the department within the company, it could prove disastrous. Some would point the finger at Mr. Waters, and some could say the staff was in on his unethical business dealings. Either way there is a lot that could go wrong. It is not ethical to put it to the side and not let anyone in the company know. I feel that if she doesn't say anything her conscience is going to get to her. I believe she is also worried about the repercussion if she does decide to report it. I believe she has to do the right thing and hand over those papers to the company, because it is the only ethical thing to do.
Mr. Waters have a very different agenda than Valerie. His preference is to spend all the companies' money and to put a lot of the companies' money into his own pocket. He spent many days off, or on vacation that he gave himself. He would lie and say that something came up to miss important meetings. He is not a team player and doesn't care anything about the company. His actions could lead to everyone not carrying about their jobs. He sets the example. Any person who lies and steels is not a leader, and should not be in a position of leadership.
Valerie wants to do the right thing for the company; however she also has a personal agenda. She wants to remain in the US and have the company pay for her education. She knows what her boss is doing is wrong, and she is afraid to do what she feel is ethical.
Discuss how organizational policies and procedures can impact ethics. I feel most employees know the policies, because it guides their day to day behaviors. Through the text book and through my own observation I learned that organizational culture may vary. If you have a strong leader the organization and it's polices thrive. Strong leaders abide by the rules and support all policies. Strong leaders lead by example. If you have a weak leader, one that does not support the companies' goals ethics tends to suffer. Weak leaders tend to do what they want no matter what the cost. (Hellriegel, & Slocum 2011)
Sexual Harassment is a policy that protects the individual from unwanted sexual advances. It also protects individuals from performing sexual favors to advance. Everyone within the organization should know that if something offends another person it should be avoided. Each person should be able to feel comfortable in their work environment. (Hellriegel, & Slocum 2011)
Every company has safety policies, because it is very important. These safety polices tell you what to wear, and how to wear it. Companies have material safety data sheets which contains information about the chemicals that are on site. These sheets tell employees of the safety hazards, and how to protect themselves against the chemicals.
Policies and procedures are put into place to support both the company and its individuals. With all the policies each employee must follow the guidelines. Ethics come into play when employees do not want to follow the policies and procedures. When you know of someone that is steeling do you report it? Ethics is being able to do the right think when all the odds are not in your favor. Treat everyone in your organization fairly. Most people know how important it is to treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. The policies are guidelines to live by at work.
Discuss the ethical dilemmas that Valerie is facing. Valerie is faced with doing what is right, or doing what benefits her the most. She found sheets in a copier that illustrates that her boss is using the company to make money for himself personally. The dilemma is having this information and wanting to do the right thing; however by doing what's right she could hurt her current employment. Valerie discussed with her boyfriend about the letters she found in the copier. At first he did not understand the important of the letters. Valerie's boyfriend and she came to the conclusion that she should wait before reporting it. (Hellriegel, & Slocum 2011)
One of the problems that Valerie faces is she does not have a green card. A work visa allows non US citizens with unique skills to work in this country for a certain amount of time. If she lost her job, she only has thirty days to find another or she could
