CMGT441: Introduction to Information Systems Security

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing has gradually gained popularity in the information technology sector and has become a trend in which many organizational giants, such as Microsoft and Google, have taken advantage of as this coveted service grows.  The “Cloud Platform” (2015) website shares that cloud computing gives businesses on-demand access to a variety of software and services while giving IT a shared pool of configurable computing resources at the platform, infrastructure and application layers.  The Microsoft website from which I retrieved this information (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/solutions/cloud-computing.aspx) provides information about:

  • What is cloud computing?
  • Why cloud computing?
  • Expect more from the cloud.
  • and Learn more about Microsoft’s Cloud OS vision.

I thought Microsoft did a nice job at explaining the different aspects of what the Cloud is and what benefits can be attained by its services.  Additionally, the added videos that each link provides helps to give the reader and listener a better idea of what this service offers, as well as comparisons versus VMware and AWS (Amazon Web Services).  Each vendor will try to sway the consumer or business owner towards purchasing their services, so most of the data on Microsoft’s website appears to be biased, as one would expect to encounter from virtually any vendor website.  However, the information provided on the website was laid out clearly and in a way that is understandable to business owners and staff.

More  probably could have been done in terms of explaining more on the security benefits of making the move over to cloud computing.  Microsoft talks a lot about making life easier for IT and organizations through the use of cloud computing, but not too much is written about security measures and the implications, if any, involved with moving over to cloud computing.  Any information between transmitted over the web these days can easily become intercepted by unknown cyber-criminals, so digital safety and security is a top priority for many, if not all, organizations.
