TESCO MALAYSIA:

Tesco supported Earth Hour :

KUALA LUMPUR, Wednesday, March 27, 2009 - On 28th March 2009, At 8.30 P.m, Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd, joined other World Organizations in many countries in support of Earth Hour by switching off lights and all non-essential electrical appliances for 10 Minutes.

Tesco Malaysia Chief Executive Office Chris Bush said,"Tesco is supporting the event by either switching off or dimming lights at all our 29 stores throughout Malaysia as well as encouraging all 10,000 employees across the country to take part."

Apart from switching off or dimming lights at the stores, Tesco will also support the initiative through their website, informing customers of the initiative and calling for support.

Bush explained that Tesco Malaysia has adopted tackling climate change as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

Tesco Malaysia's Greener Living Campaign:

Tackling climate change falls under caring for the environment promise that Tesco has set under its community plans promises that includes; actively supporting local communities, buying and selling our products responsibly, giving customers healthy choices and creating good jobs and careers.

At the beginning of 2007, Tesco Malaysia started to make changes in the way our stores are built in order to reduce environmental impact.

Installing new energy saving lights in all our new stores – saving up to 30% of the energy usage. Putting covers on freezers that reduce the energy required to run them as well as keep frozen food at a constant low temperature to improve quality. Installed self-closing taps that reduce the amount of wasted water in washrooms – saving 14.6% of Tesco's water usage versus last year. Made fridges more energy efficient so that they use 30% less energy.
