Kristen Cookie Assignment

Answer the following questions:

How long will you take to fill a rush order?

When adding 5min for mixing, 2min for spooning the batter, 10min baking, 3 min cooling time, 2min packing the cookies and 1 min to accept payment, the total time for an order would take 23 min to fill an order of one dozen cookies.

How many orders can you fill in a night, assuming you are open four hours each night? Since they work 4 hours, (that is equal to 240 minutes).   The baking of 10min is our bottleneck; therefore the max orders filled will be 24 orders.

How much of your own and your roommate's valuable time will it take to fill each order? It takes the roommate 4 min per dozen cookies.  The roommate spends one min putting the cookies in the oven, 2min packing the cookies and 1 min accepting payment.

It takes me 7min for one dozen, 9min for two dozen and 11 min for 3 dozen.  That is because I am mixing and you can mix up to 3 dozen cookies which takes 5 min, so this 5 min does not change assuming I am making 3 dozen cookies of the same kind.

For Kristen's Cookies, develop a Gantt chart of the activities and the resources (Kristen, Roommate, and Oven).

[pic 1]

This chart breaks down the time Kristen and her roommate spend making one dozen cookies.  It also includes the time the oven takes to bake the cookies.

It takes them a total of 23 min to make one dozen cookies.

Determine the amount of idle time Kristen and Roommate has for each dozen cookies produced.

For one dozen cookies, after Kristen mixes and spoons the batter onto the tray (takes a total of 7min), she is idle for the rest of the process.  Therefore, she is idle for 16min.   The roommate begins her contribution of placing the cookies on in the oven (takes one min) then waits 9min for them to cook, then takes 2min to pack them and one min to accept payment.  Therefore the roommate is idle for 9min(cooking)+5min (mixing)+2min(spooning mixture onto tray)+3min (cool time)= 19min idle time for the roommate to make one dozen cookies

For two dozen the roommate is idle for 26min.  5 min waiting for Kristen to mix the batch+2min for her to spoon 1st batch + the 1 min remainder she will wait for Kristen to spoon second batch + 9min she will wait while the first dozen bakes in the oven.  And 4 min for dozen 2 to bake. 2 min for cooling time (since she will spend one min of cooling time putting the second dozen in the oven)  and 3 min for dozen 2 to cool and the total is 26 min.

For 3 dozen the roommate is idle 32 min total.   5 min for Kristen to mix+ 2 min to wait for tray 1 and 1 min to wait for tray two Kristen spooned the batter on, 9 min for the first dozen to bake then 4 min for second and another 4 min for 3rd dozen to bake since she was busy doing other steps she didn’t need to wait while being idle for the  2nd and 3rd dozen. 2 min per tray to wait for dozen one, two and three min for the 3rd dozen to cool.
