Letter About Virginia Hamilton

Dear Reader,

Hello, my name is Eric Siavichay today I am writing a letter to you about Virginia Hamilton. Well, Virginia Hamilton is a very prolific author who writes stories about inspirational characters who beat the odds and stand up for what they believe in. Thought some suffer in the act of fighting for what they believe in, they accomplish their goal which was set by them and for them. Virginia Hamilton also writes about folktales told by her grandfather, who was a slave that gained his freedom. Virginia Hamilton’s books follow many patterns and include many different themes. In this letter I would like to inform you regarding the theme of freedom. Freedom is used numerous times in her books and it shows how much the character fought for their freedom. The theme in her book is what the book’s principle or what the books morale is. It is the main idea that the book is trying to get across to you and I chose freedom as my theme.

Virginia Hamilton wrote many books, but one book in specific titled The People Who Could Fly is a perfect example of the theme of freedom. The story begins with a young lady named Sarah picking cotton in the fields. She had her baby strapped to her back and the baby begins to bawl. Then the master tells the lady to shut up the baby. He whips the infant and like all hurt children, the baby begins to cry. The young lady begs for the cruel master to pity her and the master whips her in the back of her legs. Then an old man whose name is Toby helps her to her feet. He tells Sarah to fly away with him and they recite the magic words which make them fly. Sarah and Toby rose into the sky and “Say she rose just as free as a bird”. This quote from the book shows that she was free from the master and that she flew away from the field. She gained her freedom by flying away from the cruel master. Others that were working in the fields flew away also. “And they too rose on the air. They rode the hot breezes”. The others also flew away from the harsh master and gained their freedom.

Virginia Hamilton writes about true stories which were passed on by her grandfather. One story that I read individually is titled A Kidnapped Child and it is about an eleven year old child named Olaudah Equiana who was taken as a slave. He was sold and renamed Gustavus Vassa. He was then sold and resold again till he was sent to England. “He was allowed to earn money and pay for his freedom”. This
