Library Orientations Are Essential

Library Orientations are Essential

Students should attend library orientations and make use of the information provided by the speaker. Although students may look at orientations as being a waste of time, they fail to realize that, in reality, it saves them time in the long run. Not only does it save them time, it also makes them aware of all the services provided by the school library and may motivate them to take advantage of them.

As a student walks into the library where the library orientation is being held, he/she may wonder if the orientation is going to tell him something he doesn’t already know. Upon listening to what the speaker has to say, he will be aware of all the services that are being provided by the library. For instance, it will inform the student about the Special Collections Center. The Special Collection Center collects materials about local areas. If there’s anything written about a local area, it will be held in the special collections area. It will also inform a student about the Inter Library Loan. At the Inter Library Loan, you can ask for a book/article in any library in the country. All you do is ask for a book, and you should receive it within two weeks. The student will find that call numbers in the spine of books are really convenient. The subject of the book is based on the first letter or two of the call number, P being for literature, PZ being for kid’s literature, J for political science, L for education etc.

The library is not only informative to a student it also encourages him/her to get a student ID at the front desk and take advantage of the services provided by the Library’s Special Collection Center, Inter Library Loan, front desk, computers etc. The student will also become aware of the advantages that these services provide, like being able to check out as many books as one wishes to,
