1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Aim and Objectives

This proposal's aim is to promote the city of Kathmandu in as a MICE destination through feasibility study of corporate market in the surrounding area, marketing strategies and characteristic that could be suitable for development and the evaluation of Kathmandu in terms of PEST analysis.

1.2 Background

Background of Nepal:

Nepal is located between China and India with a total area of 147,181square kilometers. The country is famous for having 8 of the world's 10 highest mountain peaks, the famous Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga are both located within the country. (Ncthakur.itgo.com, 2012) According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the population of 26,620,809 in 2011 with a 1.4% of growth rate. (Census.gov.np, 2012)

Nepal has three regions geographically: Hills, Mountain and Plain areas. The plain areas covered 23% of the total area of the country and 50.2% of the population of Nepal live in this region. The other half, about 43% of the population lives in the Hill region which varies from 610 meters to 4,800 meters above the sea level and has 43% coverage over the total area. The rest of the population live in the Mountain region which has a 34% of the area and with altitudes vary between 4,877 to 8,848 meters above sea level. (Census.gov.np, 2012)

Background of Kathmandu:

Kathmandu, the nation capital city of Nepal, is located in the central of Nepal and has an average elevation of 1,400 meters. (Kathmandu.gov.np, 2012) It is the largest metropolitan and modernized city in Nepal and has the largest population of 1,006,656 within the country. (Census.gov.np, 2012)

With over 2000 years of rich history, the city is considered as the cultural hub of Nepal and the ranked the oldest settlements in the central of Himalaya. The old style of the city corresponds to the current core of the Kathmandu, it includes a compact zone of narrow streets and temple squares. Many old squares and temples in the city are designated as World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The culture of Kathmandu has been inspired by the two traditions: Hindu and Buddhist. From the tradition customs to the festivals, art to literature, they are all religious in character. Nepali is the official language of the city. However, with a literacy rate of 98%, English is understood by most of the people within the city. (Kathmandu.gov.np, 2012)

1.3 Reasons of Choice

Firstly, Kathmandu is seen to be an ideal MICE destination due to the unique culture and the remarkable beauty of nature that the city preserved. The city offers a wide range of activities that the delegates could visit and look around. From watching the sunrise over the mountains, to watching animals like elephants walking in their natural habitat, from enjoying arts in medieval era to enjoying a night in a night club.
