Michelagnelo Vs Donatello
The sculpture of the David was sculpted by Michelangelo and Donatello. Donatello’s sculpture of the David was created a century before Michelangelo’s David. The David Sculpture that Donatello and Michelangelo sculptured are both remarkable pieces of art that have very small similarities and many differences. In my opinion the only two things in common these sculptures posses is the title “David” itself and the stance, both David’s have their figures weight shifted to one foot. The sculptures differences create the viewer to be affected differently from each one. Due to the size of Michelangelo’s David and it’s stance it leads me to favor Michelangelo’s statue over Donatello’s small looking boy statue.
Michelangelo’s David shows that his David is more of a heroic and taller looking man’s body which is in a stance that shows confidence. Michelangelo’s David also reflects his knowledge of the human anatomy as stated in Michelangelo’s David, A Masterpiece Restored “Only the torso imparts true serenity, and the modeling on the chest and abdomen transmits every anatomical detail without rigidity or excess, breadth without tension”. At first glance you can see and notice David’s muscles. The David that Michelangelo sculpted is a man unlike Donatello’s David which is a boy.
Donatello’s David shows that his David is more of boy than a taller man looking statue such as Michelangelo’s. Donatello’s sculpted David is made out of bronze unlike Michelangelo’s marble masterpiece. Donatello’s David is wearing boots and a bonnet, he has a feather caressing up his leg with Goliath’s head at his feet. Donatello’s David has a sword in his hand whereas Michelangelo’s has a slingshot in his. This David that Donatello sculpted is just over five feet tall and compared to Michelangelo’s seventeen feet tall sculpture. Donatello’s David is said to look more like a peasant kid from a farm that the bible describes whereas Michelangelo’s looks like a Roman god.
