Morality

Based on Haught’s article words such as “morality”, “values” and “ethics” are, often times, used interchangeably, but carry their own meaning.

The word “ethics” has been used differently over the course of time by different groups of scholars and professionals. According to the article, some define ethics as the study of how best to live. Others define ethics as a code of conduct that one is expected to follow in their professions. Philosophers would argue that the term “ethics” can be used interchangeably with the word “morality”. Which group is right? I think one can argue that they are all right in some way or another, although I tend to disagree with the philosophers’ assessment. To me, “ethics” is a base to which an individual conducts themselves in a professional manner taking into account their own morality and set of values. Ethics can be applied to the business world and in one’s every day life. I believe that the word “ethics” can be broken down further into business ethics and life ethics. Ethical decisions need to be made in the workplace and in the home. It is how we ethically treat our co-workers our business partners and our business, as well as, our neighbors and community.

According to Professor Phillips, the word “morality” is the set of principals of right and wrong. The article points out, that Philosophers would argue that ethics are more concerned with �right’ and �wrong’ and less with what is �good’ and �bad’. To me, one’s morality is a set of beliefs in how to live your life and how the decisions you make and the consequences they have will impact you and your families life. Morality, I believe, is different from one group to another. One religious group’s set of morals may have little to no impact on another. While morals may impact your decision making skills, I believe that one’s morality should sometimes be left out of business discussions.
