One Half Timing, One Half Luck
81 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a hot afternoon in New York Citys Upper East Side, a place where only the wealthy survive. Brody sits across from Lorelai in a local Starbucks, admiring her eyes. “Shes gorgeous”, he thinks to himself as he gets up to order their coffee. Her orders himself a Caramel Machiatto and Lorelai a Vanilla Latte, her favorite. Brody and Lorelai have been best friends ever since he could remember. Nothing romantic, no kissing, just friends. People make jokes here or there, and the occasional “Oh my God you guys would be so cute together!” comes about from time to time but Brody can do nothing but laugh it off. He loves Lorelai. He will love her more than she will ever know; or at least he thinks so. It’s a classic “You Belong With Me” situation, something that most people only see in the movies. He loves her hair, her smile, the way he makes her laugh without even trying. They just click. They talk for hours, and they tell each other every single thing. Theres nothing he doesn’t know about her and nothing she doesn’t know about him. As Brody comes back with their drinks she smiles that beautiful smile and says “Thanks best friend.” Those words hit him hard, like bricks. “Best friend and nothing more,”, he thinks, “It’s been like that for years and it probably always will be.” Brody isn’t the most confident guy on the block.
He watches as she sips her latte and she says, “Mmm. So Brody, I still don’t know what to do about Rick, like do you think he likes me or what. Boys are SO confusing. Its so hard for me to tell!” Brody helps Lorelai with all of her “boy” troubles. He gives great advice. His advice usually always helps her out but despite this, he cannot seem to use any of it for himself. He’s stuck. Stuck on Lorelai. “Hmmm, well,” Brody explains, “I don’t see how he couldn’t. You’re perfect.” “oh STOP!”, Lorelai says with a giggle, “seriously!” Little does she know that he’s being more than serious. Brody laughs it off. “Well I mean everytime we all hang out, all you guys do is flirt so…im guessing he does.” “I guess…” mutters Lorelai, “but why isnt he doing anything about it?” Brody looks at her like shes insane. “He’s scared. Not everyone has your confidence Lorelai.” Lorelai was the most confident person Brody had ever met.
She was fearless, afraid of nothing. She knew she was pretty, knew she was smart. That confidence seemed to disappear when it came to guys. Lorelai was different, but that “typical” teenage girl emerged in her relationships. Shes afraid of rejection. Simple as that.
“Brody you know how I am with guys. He has to make a move soon or I’ll go insane! I NEED him.” Lorelai exclaims. More typical teenage girl. Brody didn’t like this side of her. He explains, “Im telling you he likes you. Just wait, its been what, 2 weeks since you’ve started talking to him? Cool it.” “Ugh, I hate waiting.” Lorelai moans. “Yeah, I know.” Brody says sarcastically, with a smile. Lorelai giggles and slaps his arm. They soon finish their drinks and leave. The sun beats down on them as they exit. Taxis and people fill the streets and sidewalks. Typical New York. Lorelai spreads out her arms as she says “Now this is what I like. First day of summer break with my best friend on a beautiful day in the most amazing part of the most amazing city in the world. Summer is going to be amazing! Maybe we’ll even find someone for you Brody.” She says this with a wink as they walk down the block as Brody thinks, “If she only knew.”
A week passes and, of course, Lorelai gets Rick. She always gets the guy. She’s got something so irresistible that it makes it hard for most to say no to her. It’s a bit different this time, though. She begins to spend a lot of time with Rick, so much that Brody barely sees her. Its peculiar; usually she gives Brody updates on the whole thing. But this time, nothing.
Brody begins to spend a lot more time with his other best friend, Mike. If Brody and his friends were Disney characters, Mike would be Goofy. His constant antics make every time Brody and him hang out an adventure. Brody and Mike sit in Mikes room as Brody begins to explain the whole problem. “Lorelai hasn’t been talking to me at all. We text sometimes but its rare and I really don’t know why.” Mike rolls his eyes, “Why are you always so hung up on Lorelai? She’s got a boyfriend, get over it bro. You had a million chances and you blew them all. Don’t be jealous man, there’s tons of girls out there. We’ll just have to be each others wingmen.” Despite Mikes goofiness, he always tells it like it is. Brody blushes with embarrassment, saying “Its not about that, Mike. She usually tells me everything and this time she’s not. I think it might be Rick, he seems like a nice guy but I cant shake this bad feeling about him.” Mike rolls his eyes again stating that it’s the “love” talking. “If you really want to know, why don’t we go find out? Or are you scared? Its about time we go on another adventure.” Brody jumps at the chance. He has to know what’s up with Lorelai. “Let the investigation begin.”
