Othello is a Classic

Anything by William Shakespeare is a classic. Shakespeare is a world-renowned playwright. All of his works are well known and very popular. Othello is one of, his plays that consist of sexual jealousy and controversy of a romance between a biracial couple. Shakespeare’s Othello is considered a classic because is consist of all the elements of a class: timelessness, enduring theme, and relatable characters.

Othello is a classic because it includes the element of timelessness. Othello has been acted out “for centuries” and “readers have noted this play for it’s brilliance”(.Scott 413) Scott uses the word centuries to show the hundreds of years the play has lasted. He uses the term “brilliance” to describe what readers have thought for centuries. Scott combines theses two words to show that the play continues to keep it’s brilliance for centuries. “Modern audiences” continue to watch Othello to be able to “embrace the jealousy” that is natural to the lives of the characters. (Epstein 376) Epstein embraces the term “modern” to imply that the play was written in a different time period. Epstein also the term “modern” to show that Othello has endured the test of time. By standing the test of time, having it popularity remain constant through many centuries, Othello has acquired the classic element of timelessness. Many books come and go but Othello remains and so does its enduring theme.

Othello is a classic because it acknowledges enduring theme. Othello has an enduring theme of “jealousy” which is shown throughout the novel “by several characters Othello, Rodrigo, Bianca, and Iago” their jealousy flows from character to character. (Scott 417) Scott uses the phrase “several characters” to show that it is an emotion expressed by many. The jealousy is easily expressed by each character because it flows from relationship to relationship like bees flow from flower to flower. There are many types of different relationships in Othello and “The nature of jealousy in Othello isn’t limited to love.” (Scott 413) Scott utilizes the statement “ isn’t limited to love” to show that there are other relationships where envy can come into play. There are multiple relationships in Othello where jealousy occurs family, friends, and at work. Scott wants the reader to look beyond the normal thought of jealousy in love and picture the emotion affecting the characters in a different way. As the enduring theme controls the minds of the characters, many people can relate to their sexual drama.

Othello is a classic because it contains relatable characters. In the play Shakespeare highlights that “sexual jealousy is an emotion that touches a nerve in almost everyone.” by making the audience feel the same sensation as the character while watching them act out the storyline.
