Plain English Speaking Awards
In 2011, after several rounds of auditions, I was selected to represent my school in a national oratorical competition called “Plain English Speaking Awards”. It was a great honor as only one representative from a school was sent each year. I was awarded the Silver Honor Roll for my speech and had a lot to take away from this experience. I received numerous compliments for my speech and was commended on my delivery as well as my comprehensive and unique insights.
I was also part of Cedar Girls’ Soccer team in 2011. It was the first year that soccer had started in Cedar. Despite our lack of formal exposure to the sport, with dedication and hard work, we managed to reach the finals and clinched the national championship. We were the underdogs throughout the season since it was the first year that we were participating in the Soccer Nationals’, yet we never let it affect our confidence. Even though trainings were strenuous and numerous, it was all worth it when we lifted that trophy.
I was a dedicated member of the Victoria Junior College (VJC) Soccer Team. I served as Head of Logistics for the team from July 2012 till July 2013. As Head of Logistics, I was in-charge of ensuring that all equipment was accounted for before and after trainings and matches. This was crucial in allowing trainings to run smoothly without unnecessary disruptions. I was given the opportunity to take part in the National Inter-School A’ Division Football Championship in 2012 where our team placed national 3rd and the National Inter-School A’ Division Football Championship in 2013 where we were came 1st and were named national champions. I was also able to follow the team to Bangkok on a sports trip to play against some of the best local school teams. Soccer trainings were usually three times a week but as the team approached the National Inter-School A’ Division Football Championship, trainings were increased to four times a week. This was very physically taxing and it also affected my grades. However, with determination, I ensured that I continued to work hard and divided my time between academics, soccer, cultural activities etc. I always looked to my teammates and coach for advice and took criticism in my stride to constantly try and improve myself. Through this experience, I learnt important values such as time-management, perseverance and responsibility.
Leadership
I was the class representative for the Victorian Affair (VA). The Victorian Affair was a four-day event organized for the school by a group of students from different CCAs. It had various activities that encompassed elements of class bonding, community service and fostering of school spirit. As a Victorian Affair representative, I facilitated class discussions and led the class in the activities that were carried out over the four days including the Amazing Race which was held on the second day as well as the food distribution to less fortunate households held on the fourth day. Through this experience I learnt how to translate ideas efficiently and clearly. I maintained a good relation with my peers which helped enhance my influence as a leader. I also displayed great initiative in overcoming any obstacles so as to ensure that the class was able to have an enjoyable experience throughout the VA.
