Religion

Religion plays a great role in the community. There are over 100 churches.

Denominations represented:

• Main religious grouping is the Evangelical Protestant, which represents about 19,646 people. The Southern Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church, part of the Evangelical Protestant, boost large memberships.

• Catholic and Orthodox religions are among the lowest

• Other denominations present include the Assembly of God, the Church of God of Prophecy, the Church of Nazarene, and the Church of Christ.

• African American denominations were not included in the 2000 congregation and membership totals.

These statistics were gathered in 1990 and 2000 from information given by Churches in the United States, Religious Congregations Memberships in the United States, and the Association of Statisticians of American Religion. American Religion Data Archive noted that African American denominations were not included in the 2000 congregation and membership totals.

However, I decided to speak with members of the African American community to gather why they were not included in the totals. I spoke with 3 housekeepers at the Hampton Hotel and found out that there are a small amount of African American denominations represented. Some of these denominations have mixed members. Two churches, Mother Easter Baptist Church and Temple Holiness Church, are composed only of African American members.

I also tried speaking with some clergy members whom were referred to me by the housekeepers. I was able to reach one person who told me he never heard of the survey and have no reason why they were never included. I was never able to reach the others.
