1. Introduction
As Russia is one of the worlds top 10 destinations and there are more and more Hong Kong tourists travel to Russia. This essay is aim to explore the tourist components of Russia, Hong Kong’s travel pattern and find out the reasons why the popularity is increasing to Hong Kong travellers.
2.1 Tourism components of the destination
2.1.1 The physical characteristics
Russia is not only a landmass giant, but also unique in its geographical location. Russia located in Northern Asia and the west part of the Urals is included with Europe.
Because of the large size of the country, Russia has almost all climate zones of the world, expect tropical climates. Most of the country in Russia has a continental climate, with long, cold winters and brief summers. (Weatheronline, 2014)
Russia has a wide diversity of landforms as well. Mountain ranges are found across Russia such as Ural Mountains, The Kolyma Mountains, and The Caucasus Mountains etc. Russia has more than 100,000 rivers as well, i.e. the Volga, Dnieper and Dvina etc. (Worldatlas, 2014)
From the Diversity of Russia's Plant-Life (2014), Arctic desert, taiga, tundra, wooded steppe, steppe and mixed and deciduous forest are the six groups that divided into Russian vegetation.
2.1.2 The human characteristics
Russian is the primary language of Russia, there are over 81% speak Russian as their only and first language. There are over 100 minority languages spoken in Russia as well, Tartar is the most popular, which spoke by more than 3% of the Russia’s population. (bbc, 2014)
The variety and flavors of Russian traditional foods always attracted tourists. Russians love ice cream, and they call it morozhenoe. Also the beet soup called borshch, little pastries called pirozhki, caviar, pizza called blini, dumplings called pelmeni, Russian vodka etc. are the symbolism of Russia.
Fur coat and fur cap called ushanka from Russia springs to people's mind. However, Kosovorotka is the traditional Russia shirt that may both be worn by men and women. (Looper, 2011) Nowadays, the kosovortka is mostly ornamental, reserved for celebrations or Russian folk festivals only.
Russia is a multi-ethnic and multi-faith country. According to VCIOM survey result (2010), Orthodox Christianity is the largest religion that 75% of the population belonging to it and followed by Muslim, Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism etc.
Russia is a federation and semi-presidential republic. Their President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government.
As Religion has a great influence on Russian architecture, Russia's most characteristic architectural feature is its onion-domed churches. The shape is similar to a candle flame that believed to be the flame of faith reaching up to the heavens. (Khara, 2013)
2.2 Destination mix
Russia is an attractive destination in tourism market, as there are full of beautiful natural scenery, a widely of attractions, convenient transport network and a variety of traditions and customs as well as fascinating culture. According to Russia-online.cn (2014), Russia has different attraction for different type of tourist. For example, Saint Basi Cathedral in Moscow, this kind of religion style and historical attraction, which can let the tourist learn about the history, religion and architectural style of Russia. The Moscow River where is a famous natural attraction, cruising in this river tourist can enjoy the shore scenic and buildings. In terms of the amenities, Russia have different type of accommodation for tourist who have different travel purpose such as hotel for business tourist, apartment for family and hostel for backpacker. Also, Russia has different service and facilities provided for tourist such as shopping mall, restaurant, postal and banking etc. For example, Four Seasons Hotel in St. Petersburg and European mall in Moscow. Also, Russia provides a convenient transportation for tourist and local people i.e. Domodedovo International Airport in Moscow which link the people’s home to their desired destination. Moreover, trains, bus and taxi are also available for tourist such as Moscow Metro which is a high speed trains provided a comfort, lower time cost for people.
