THE SUNFLOWER

Everyone has a weird friend I reckon. Whether you’re a nerd, a Goth or just like me, a Jock. I’m one of the most popular kids in school. Everyone wants to be friends with me. With my shiny hair and my amazing talent in football, I can get any girl I want at school. Except for one girl who I’m sure will never notice me.

She doesn’t even have any friends. Well, she does but it’s probably her pet flowers.

Everyone seems to laugh at Elisha because of the way she dresses. It is always filled with flowers, trees, leaves or even animals. Sometimes it doesn’t even match. She is such a weird girl, Elisha. I’ve known her since primary school but now we’re in Year 12, she just never changed. Elisha and I are very different but there is one thing that we have in common though, we are in the same LEAF class, a subject where most people just do gardening, like water the plants. They said it’s called horticulture. Well, for me, I call it “horri-culture” because it is a horrible class. Who likes to plant everyday? I just took this class because it is way better than Maths or Chemistry.

The bell rang.

Everyone went home except for me. I didn’t do anything. I just picked the apples from the garden and I was just playing catch with my friends with it. Now I have to clean the smelly fishpond in our school.

While I was cleaning, I heard something. It was like a voice of an angel. So sweet and so relaxing! I peeked in one of the bushes and I was shocked with what I saw.

I saw Elisha wearing her bright flowery dress while she was watering the sunflowers. She looked really beautiful by the sunlight. And that voice, Wow! What am I saying?

As I was slowly going back, Elisha suddenly spoke, “You know, my mother always told me that singing to the plants will help them grow more. She loves sunflowers and they’re my favourite because they love the sun. I’ve never seen sunlight but I always love how powerful it is. It gives life to these babies. How I wish I could see it”.

“You can see me?” I asked.

“No. But I can hear you, Dustin. I know you got detention,” said Elisha.

“What are you doing here alone? I’m sure you didn’t get detention like me but why stay here at this filthy and smelly place?” I asked.

Elisha smiled and said, “Because it is the only place I can feel the world. I can smell the fragrance of flowers, the chirping of birds and I feel like I can see the beauty of nature”. I was very stunned by her answer and yet very amazed that a girl who can’t see can get so easily happy by such little things around us that we never appreciate.

Since then, even though I don’t get detention, I stay back at school to help out Elisha. The girl who I thought was a weirdo is actually a beautiful girl. She showed me how beautiful the world is. As girly as I sound, flowers are really an amazing gift of nature. Instead of partying after school or playing video games with my friends, I always stay back after school with Elisha. I even help her get home. All of my friends were so shocked that the Jock became a tree-hugger. Sometimes, they call me the blind one because it’s as if I don’t see them anymore. For many months, Elisha and I became closer and closer. She became my best friend and the sunflowers that we grow together were like our babies.
