Song of Solomon

Song of Solomon is a novel about Milkman Dead and what one can call some of his adventures through out his life. Although other characters had their moments along the way, Milkman was the main character who we began and ended the novel with. Along with Milkman, Pilate, Macon, Ruth, Hagar, Corinthians, Lena and Guitar had their moments in the novel that gave us mystery and kept the reader interested. Toni Morrison uses various symbols, biblical references, and a lot of foreshadowing in her great novel.

After returning home Milkman’s first stop was to Pilate’s house to tell her everything about this trip and what he learned about their family. As soon as he stepped foot into the house and Pilate saw him, she struck him over the head with a bottle. Pilate was furious with Milkman because she believed that he was the cause of Hagar’s death. When he finally came to from being hit in the head, Milkman found himself on the floor of the basement. After a lot of explaining, Milkman told Pilate the information he had learned while away. The most important thing he told Pilate was about the bones in the green bag that she thought was of a man that was in the cave that. He also told her exactly what the voice of her father had been telling her for all those years and how she had been interpreting them wrong.

Since getting the bones many years ago Pilate believed the bones belonged to the white man that her and Macon killed. Milkman told her that the bones were not of the white man but actually belonged to Pilate and Macon’s father. Milkman also told her that the father was trying to tell Pilate to bury his bones on Solomon’s Leap. Also when she would hear her father saying “Sing” he didn’t mean to actually sing, he was telling her that her mother’s name is Sing.

When Pilate and Milkman returned to bury Papa’s bones many events take place. After the two get to the cave where the bones are to be buried, without stopping along the way, Milkman began to dig. Once the hole was big enough to satisfy the amount of bones Pilate dropped them in, and covered up the hole. As Pilate finishes she stands up but as fast as she stands up she drops back to the ground, after a loud gunshot. After a few minutes of conversation Pilate slips away. Two birds fly away after she dies and this seems to me as if her life is flying away
