Sonny's Blue

Sakira Russell

English Comp II

In this essay, I will state the significance between, Robert and Bub in Cathedral to Sonny and Sonny's brother in Sonny's blues . How each main character has symbolic Christ like features. In each story both main characters, Bub and then Sonny's brother have an eye opening experience that maybe they have been closed minded to a lot of things. Bub quickly misjudged Robert before even giving him a real opportunity. When Bub stated that Robert's blindness bothered; him due to him receiving any real knowledge, about the blind from movies which of course wasn't true . As far as Sonny and his brother well, Sonny wanted to be a jazz player and Sonny's brother had a misconception that jazz players only hung around the club doing nothing joking around which wasn't true at all. Robert showed Christ like features during the story just as Sonny, each differ in there on way.

At the end of Sonny's blue when he was up there playing the keys and the light shinned down upon him like a light from heaven. You can say that happens to a lot of musicians but with Sonny is dawned a different meaning. Like he was starting over and being reborn that this was him in the light that he needed to be seen in. When Robert was helping Bub draw the Cathedral it was like a real personal and intimate moment they shared together, that impacted Bub greatly. An intimate moment like that is the same kind you share when you're expressing yourself to Christ. Vey heartfelt and compassionate feeling overwhelm you. Same emotions Bub felt during the drawing of the cathedral with Robert. When Sonny's brother watched him play the piano at the night club he felt a connection between both of them that was never felt before like his vibe was drawing him in for him to fully understand Sonny's Blues.

Each person Bub, Robert, Sonny, and Sonny's brother impacted one another's life in each story. Robert helped to open up Bubs' mind to the fact that just because you're blind doesn't mean you can't live life and smoke
