Student Survival Guide

Axia College of the

University of Phoenix

Due Date:

Using Axia’s Educational Resources:

Once you have chosen your field of study and enrolled in your specific course, you would need to familiarize yourself with the resources available to you. The first contacts received are from the Axia educational support team. These people will be available to you for any questions or needs you may have. They consist of: An Enrollment Counselor, an Academic Counselor, a Financial Aid Counselor, and a Technical Support Team. Your Enrollment Counselor will guide you through the basics before you begin your first class, giving you everything you need to know to begin your classes.

Because this is an online environment, and all items are readily available, you would still need to print out certain information. The recommended action would be to print the course calendars for your current classes and each course syllabus.

The wonderful thing about this being an online environment is that the documents needed are presented in an electronic format. The course syllabi, reference forms, and reading materials are offered in portable document format (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc), or web page. These items can easily be downloaded to your computer, laptop, or even a PDA or Smartphone. This allows you to access your course documents virtually anywhere, giving you the ability to study whenever and wherever you feel you can fit it in.

There are several resources for the student to find reference materials and other pertinent information. One of these will be the student library, which can be found on Axia’s website. You will find a link to the library in the upper right hand corner of your homepage. This library functions in a more efficient and easily accessible fashion than a traditional university or public library. The library provides databases and search options for locating the materials that you will need. You will need to take detailed notes of the terms that you use in your searches and the results which you may need to refer to. Documenting items is key, because how successful a search is depends on the ability to retrieve the desired information when you need it.

When conducting library searches, you will find several databases available to you. To start your search, first select the database you wish to use. To select the correct database, read the descriptions provided to describe the types of resources that are offered through it. You may want to try searching different databases to get the most out of your search.

Upholding Academic honesty

Academic honesty is not difficult at all to maintain. It simply means to do your own original work. You can do this by not engaging in plagiarism of any manner or form. If you are quoting someone else’s words within your text, properly cite the work that you are quoting or paraphrasing. If you your work is not properly cited, you may run the risk of having that assignment rejected and not receiving any credit for your work or, for that matter, the entire class. It is extremely important that you use proper citations for all of your references and any quoted text or thought that are not your own and that you do it according to Axia’s requirements.

Setting and achieving goals:

It is very important to learn to set short-term and long-term goals. You must make sure your goals are simple and attainable and realistic. It is easy to set them according to hopes, but this can be detrimental. Goals should be plotted out as individual “stepping stones” and follow a specific timeline. If you are able to, break down each goal into smaller steps. This will help you to maintain your path to your ultimate goal even if a problem should arise. It can also give you reference points to cross off each time a specific goal or part is reached. You will find this strategy is a constant between the academic environment as well as the business world.

Since you have chosen to take courses toward a degree, you obviously have an ultimate goal in mind. Your degree will help in obtaining that goal by improving your worth to the company. But being honest, it still will not allow you to start at the top. It will, however, allow you to start at a higher level in most situations, making that ultimate goal that much more attainable.
