Summary of Anne Frank

The life of a young girl: the diary of Anne Frank is a personal account of the struggle of a 15 year-old Jewish girl living during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the systematic, state-directed, genocide of six million Jews. As well as the murder of five million other civilians, including Slavs, Gypsies and others, during World War II.At that time Hitler had taken over Germany and persuaded the people that the reason for Germany’s economy problems was the larger population of Jews & Gypsies. Hitler’s pride and prejudice towards the Jews and Gypsies soon had every German in Germany against anyone who was not as they said “pure German”. He claimed to be allied to a “Master Race” also known as Aryans. Hitler then created stronger armies to take over Germany. He stirred up nationalism in the people, which was the main cause of World War II.

Anne and her older sister Margot were born in Germany, but because of the growing persecution and fear the Germans placed on Jews, Otto Frank, and Anne’s father relocated his family to Holland. Even there they were not safe from the German government who wanted every Jew and Gypsy in Germany executed. In 1935 the German government passed a law that stated all rights and privileges that we today take for granted were taken away. Anne frequently reminisces when she was permitted to ride her bicycle down the streets of Holland. Shopping for food and necessities had been limited to only 5 hrs; also they could not be out after 8pm.The Jews could not attend any type of entertainment, not even movies! They were not permitted to gather for dinners or parties together. Anne often talked about the law prohibiting Jews from marring non-Jews, so that the Aryan race would remain “pure”. Later on Hitler and the Nazi’s created death and labor camps.

Initially everything was suitable; Anne had just had her 13th birthday party. Receiving a brooch, a diary which she had picked out herself, and a pair of shiny black shoes. Above all the gifts Anne cherished the diary the most, since she herself aspired to be an author one-day. Kitty, she would call her diary, became her best friend. Enclosed in Kitty for safekeeping would be Anne’s joys and sorrows.

Anne notes in her diary on July 5, 1942, when the family received a letter that would change her family’s life forever. A call notice had arrived for Margot, to report to the police so she could begin working in a death camp. This caused Otto Frank to take his family to the “Secret Annex” which was a hiding place he had set up in the attic of his company’s warehouse. Later on four more people joined the Frank family in hiding. Mr. and Mrs.Van Daan along with their son Peter joined. Also Mr.Dussel the dentist who Otto Frank kindly decided to take in. Anne described the Van Daans as a dysfunctional family. Anne thought of Mrs.Van Daan as a pest and a baby. She viewed Mr. Van Daan as a quiet but nice man. As for Mr. Dussel she viewed him as a boring old stingy man. Miep Gies a loyal employee of Mr. Frank, and her husband provided their food and provisions for their friends. Being in constant closed quarters caused fights between the inhabitants, such as the holding back of food between the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. There were arguments about politics and how long the war would last seemed to linger on Anne thought. In between all this love was in the air. Anne had gotten her first kiss
