Summer Dresses
In the short story, "Girls in their Summer Dresses" by Irwin Shaw is about a married man who lives in New York City. One day the couple is out walking and the women notices her husband looking at a lot of women the same way he used to look at her when they first met. The wife is concerned about this but doesn't know what to do.
The story leads the reader to believe the Frances, the wife, has changed by the end of the story because in the beginning she wanted to just spend time with her husband but at the end of the story she did not want to be alone with him. She was planning a whole nice calm day for just the two of them but after they had the conversation about how many women her husband, Michael looks at and what he sees when he looks at them she decided that she was going to go into the country with another couple they know. I think Frances changed a little but from that conversation cause now she knows that any day at any time her husband can leave her for another woman he stares at on the streets of New York City. I think Frances uses the alcohol as a way to calm herself down as her husband, Michael tells her all about the women he looks at. He says he likes the office women and the sales women because they give a lot of attention to the men. He also makes a comment saying that he likes when the girls change over to their summer dresses with the weather. His wife did not like any of the comments he was making. The
