SWOT actually originated from Sun Tze's Art of War where you examine your organization own strengths and weaknesses as well as scanning the organization's external environments for threats and opportunities.

While it is true that Michael Porter's Model is used to examine the five competitive forces external to the organization, but the analysis of the five forces is used to gauge the organization's own strengths, weaknesses as well as threats and opprtunities.

So basically the two models are similar but the latter is applied more specifically to the competitive environment of the business world while SWOT can be used to analyse anything, including yourself.

p/s my research area is e-commerce and I have come out with a conceptual modeland a write up on the application of Michael Porter in the Internet environment. And I am trying out this model by creating a web site and see how it fares in the competitive environment of the Internet. The result is my web site come out as the top Googlesearched web site in that niche market and I am earning quite good money from Google's Adsense program, not bad for a personal site.The efficiency and appeal of the business can be improved to another grade if you take a few things in to cautious attentions be it offline or online your policy should have the charm and efficiency that the business can realize its goals.

There are two famous approaches that are used. One is known as the Potter's five approach that works best and efficiently for the analysis of an industry. The other one is well equipped to understand and deliver an analysis of a situation is called SWOT analysis. The Porter's Five Forces was given by Michael Porter, a strategy professor at Harvard Business. The Porter's five is a magnificent process that gives an effective and time saving way to analyze the strength and comparative edge of the organization.

There are major five forces that influence the outcome of any industry. These prime factors are found in any organization and they are found within the organization.
