The American Revolution Was the Most Important Event in Our Nation's History
Thesis: The American Revolution was the most important event in our nation’s history.
The American Revolution was in my eyes the most important event in our nation’s history. It started our freedom. There were many reasons for our founding fathers to want freedom from Great Britain. One of the main reasons was taxation without representation. Bunker Hill, Saratoga, and Yorktown were some of many battles that were fought during the revolution. Our independence was declared on July 4th when the Declaration of Independence was signed. That document is one of the most important documents of our nation. Who ever signed this document basically signed their own death warrant. Our founding fathers wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson were some of the rebels that broke the law. They risked their own lives to put their “John Hancock” on the Declaration of Independence.
After the French and Indian War, Great Britain started treating the colonies horribly. They started taxing the colonists for all the damage that occurred through out the war. Great Britain came up with the Stamp Act, Townsend Act, and few other acts to tax the colonists. The colonies started to get frustrated and with that frustration the Sons of Liberty were created. The Sons of Liberty were a group of males who boycotted and came up with other ways to hurt the British. They were also part of the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The Sons of Liberty were the people who corrupted the soldiers to fire their weapons during the Boston Massacre. They also were the people who threw the tea of a British ship into the Boston Harbor. The Daughters of Liberty were more organized stood up against the same ideas that The Sons of Liberty did, but not with outrageous ideas. They came up with things such as coffee to replace tea so that they had something to take its place. Not as drastic as the Sons but just as affective. These were the actions that started the revolution. The battles started soon after.
The battle of Bunker Hill is one of the most famous battles of the American Revolution. What most people don’t know about the battle was that Bunker Hill was not the main hill or area that was captured that day. Bunker Hill was the smaller and more easily captured hill that day. The other hill was Breeds Hill. Three times the British tried to capture the hills, but the first two times the patriots fought them off. On the third and final try, Great Britain took Breeds Hill shortly after that they took Bunker Hill as the patriots were retreating. Great Britain’s main factor for victory was General Howe’s determination. He would not lose that battle no matter what. He might have won the battle and captured that territory, but he lost a lot more soldiers than the colonists did that day.
Unlike the Battle of Bunker Hill the Battle of Yorktown is one of the final and most important battles of the American Revolution. This Battle was a great victory for the Americans. George Washington won this battle because of his great strategy. France’s fleet was in the bay creating a blockade, as the patriots attacked Cornwallis’ army. He and his men had no where to go, they could not fight off the patriots and they could not escape or even get supplies by sea because of the French blockade. Cornwallis had no other choice, but to surrender to the patriots. That marked the end of the war. Losing the battle of Yorktown meant that the colonies were going to win the war.
Besides battles, during the revolution there were many important documents written. One of the most important documents that made the American Revolution as important as it was is the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is a well written document that signifies our freedom and the basis to our future government. The continental congress voted for independence and also elected a committee to draft the declaration.
“The committee, composed of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman, in turn instructed Thomas Jefferson to write the declaration. Jefferson began his work on June 11 and toiled in seclusion writing a number of drafts. After presenting his final draft, the committee further revised the document and submitted it to the Continental Congress on June 28. On July 2, the Continental Congress voted for independence and refined its Declaration of Independence before releasing it to the public on July 4th.”
July fourth is our nation’s birthday. It is the most important day in our history.
Thomas Paine was a great man during the American Revolution. He wrote the second most important document of Revolutionary
