The British Influence on Australia
Since the arrival of the First Fleet in seventeen eighty eight, Australia have had a subservient relationship to Britain. As a matter of fact the settlers mainly from Irish, Scottish and English backgrounds brought with them their culture, they way of life. They tried to recreate the British society in the other end of the world. The colonisation of Australia has been long and difficult. Convicts were brought to the colonies of New South Wales and Tasmania. They had to work the land, to build houses... After the Federation in nineteen zero one Australia became more independent but still belonged to the British Empire. It was a part of the British Commonwealth till nineteen eighty six and the Australia Act. Australia is nowadays considered as multicultural but the biggest influence remains the British and to a certain extent the European one. We can notice a big influence in the arts and in architecture as well. Education in Australia is also based on the British system. of education. Finally the government is based on Westminster system.
