That poem was written by a sailor named Antwone Fisher. He wrote that poem for his superior officer to describe his temper and abusive childhood. Antwone was a foster child that was sexually and physically abused. His foster mother abused him although she believed the abuse was a form of discipline. Antwone recalls his two foster brothers and him always being called nigga. He said that they knew which child she was calling by the way she said nigga. If they were to do something wrong she would walk the boys to the basement tie them to a pole and beat them with a wet towel. She would stop when one cried louder than the rest and she would say ‘I know I got the right one now.'- Antwone Fisher. Violence like the one Antwon experienced happens every day. Women and men are being abused by the people that they are supposed to love and trust. Women between the ages of 18-24 are in domestically violent relationships. Three out four females are being abused but will not tell anyone that they are being abused. Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States.
