Happiness can be defined as a broad, overall culmination of small successes in life, whether real or imagined. And, although we cannot be successful in every endeavor we attempt in our lives, we can still find joy in those achievements which are reached. Those who avoid judging themselves too harshly or by extreme standards are much happier than those who are too hard on themselves or who feel like failures. Despite countless small successes, these negative thoughts hinder the person's ability to feel joy or happiness at all, leading to depression or other mental conditions. It is best to focus our attentions upon the small, everyday successes, gleaning pride, self-esteem, and happiness as much and as often as we can.

One of the easiest and perhaps most enjoyable ways of fostering good mental health is through hobbies. A hobby is anything that you do for the sheer joy of doing it, typically in your spare or leisure time. Hobbies include physical activity, creative projects, all forms of art, competitions, and many others. Engaging in one of the countless hobbies available on the market today will allow you to gain a sense of accomplishment, be successful in small endeavors, provides a sense of control, and provides a wide variety of choices. In other words, your personal success is totally driven by your own choices and efforts, rather than based on the accomplishments or cooperation of others.

If someone you know, or perhaps yourself, seems to have trouble finding ambition in life or getting excited about anything, perhaps it's time to find success through hobbies. Success is inspirational. Success builds your confidence. As new hobbies and related skills are learned, confidence levels rise. People who learn about and enjoy new hobbies feel happier and more ambitious. They become excited about things that seemed useless in the past. They enjoy showing off their work, accomplishments, or latest art projects. Smiles grace the faces of hobbyists with greater frequency as projects are completed. Therefore, it stands to reason that starting a new hobby is a wonderful, inexpensive way to support mental health. Hobbies are an exceptionally helpful for good mental health, filling your life with what you love and enjoy. In addition, hobbies provide a certain sense of control, since they are chosen by the hobbyist based on personal preferences, likes or dislikes, and individual interests.

Hobbies do not have to be all about mental health. They can be enjoyed for the sheer act of enjoyment. They can bring together like-minded hobbyists for shows or events, where hobby projects can be showcased and admired. Hobbies add a certain spice to life, especially when considering the vast array and variety of hobbies that one can choose. Some hobbyists have even taken their projects to a whole new level and started small businesses by selling completed items. For example, a woman in Oklahoma who began making Native American beadwork items at the tender age of 11 now sells her work as a means of full-time income to support her family. A retired gentleman who has carpal tunnel syndrome began making an afghan in order to alleviate his pain five years ago, yet today he creates and sells his blankets by custom order. A former police officer who started tinkering with old tractors in his spare time now repairs them for profit. These and many other individuals
