What is Leadership?
Leadership is a word that has several different meanings from one person to another. There are many characteristics that define a leader. According to several dictionary sources, one can say that leadership is defined as a person that exerts influence, motivates and inspires to other people to achieve more than their usual capability. A leader is also selflessness and makes a difference regardless of the situation. Although leadership can be viewed from many different angles, I believe that leadership is the intrinsic skill that a person has to guide a group of people towards better situations and outcomes. Additionally, a leader is the way one can handle life’s trials and tribulations; the way one’s actions, whether good or bad, have on the individuals around a person; and the way other people feed off the abilities of a leader. A person can have innate leadership abilities or can develop leadership skills. Personally, as a college student, I believe that people who possess the characteristics of scholarship manly deeds, and love for humanity will develop into the future leaders of the world.
Scholarship is one key ingredient that will develop a person into a leader. Scholarship is the way one strives and pursues knowledge in a particular area of study. A scholar uses many methods of discipline to attain as much knowledge as possible. Scholarship has an important connection to the qualities that a leader possess. The first connection is by the way a scholar uses his knowledge to get himself through though situations. A scholar could use certain types of leadership styles that a person used in the past to lead a mass of people. He also uses analytical skills to assess problems. Another quality that a scholar has that is connected in becoming a leader is a scholar’s motivation. A studious person will use the same motivation he has used in excelling in his scholastic areas to motivate the people around him to go beyond their normal capabilities. Scholarship is very essential to the characteristics of leadership because the qualities a scholar has will provide as a foundation for a leader.
Senator Vincent Fort, a college professor of mine, always told me and some other students that, “one must know how to serve, before he or she can lead.” As a fortunate human being to be in college, I believe that college students are all responsible for the betterment of the world in the future. Manly deeds, another ingredient that will develop a person into a leader, is a phrase to describe the betterment of the world. Manly deeds means servitude to the community and whatever environment one is associated with. One that possess manly deeds has several connections in being a leader.
