Central City Medical Group Summary

Central City Medical Group was established in 1980.It is an innovative primary care organization that specialized in providing care to the frail elderly and margins such as elderly, chronically ill. CCMG was using the nurses and physician teams, they provided individualized primary care to patients no matter where they are especially to the frail elderly. In general, CCMG helped a lot of very sick patients that no one else wanted.

In 2005, Deb Moore who has a very strong business and IT background became the director of CCMG. She found that CCMG was not computerized, it still use paper-based information system and the providers still documented their record on paper. CCMG realized that electronic health record could help to provide high quality and efficient care to patients. Using a tablet is also make provider easier. In addition, CCMG want to participate in pay-for-performance initiatives for additional revenue.

In beginning of 2006, after the board approved. CCMG began to plan the implementation of EHR. They generate a visioning session with providers and identified a number of important goals and considerations. Moore and the management team established a three-tier project management structure include Project Steering Committee. In the vendor selection, eCW was picked free three vendors because it was cheaper and seems more functionally for the CCMG.

Before Go Live, CCMG did several preparations.  Bases on the EHR, CCMG redesign the work processes and also developed a plan to shift employees into different jobs. They also initiated training and testing as parallel processing to avoid the high testing cost.

On October 30 2006, HER of CCMG went live. Though the implementation of the office functions went smoothly, the committee still developed a detailed list of all the problems encountered during implementation.

CCMG also have some problem to implement the system in the community. There is not enough Internet connectivity; it made the provider hard to make home visits using EHR. There were some technical problems like the “inking” function problem need to be solved. For many of the technical problem which involved interfaces, eCW keep working on them but can not found solutions efficiently.
