There are numerous models to decision making. Everyone is successful in their own way and satisfied with their decision making. So what may work for me, may not work for another person. The method I chose was based upon my personal lifestyle. All decisions have advantages and disadvantages that is why it was important for me to choose a style that I am comfortable with.
Decisions affect our everyday life, from waking up in the morning to going to bed at night. A decision on the job is extremely important and can make or break a company. I was always told that ‘Knowledge is Power’, the more knowledge I have it will be easier to make decisions. In choosing the 7-step Decision-Making Model I began to gather questions that required understanding of the situation at hand. Step 1: Identify the decision to be made, it is important to me as well as the company to understand what we are trying to decide. In my organization the decision was to hire a new elementary teacher, one of the questions I asked myself was ‘What does this person have to offer our company?’
Step 2: Self-Assessment (Know Yourself), I had to take a look at myself and see do I have a true understanding of my skills, interests and personality characteristics, these are some of the things I would look for in an employee. What skills do I want on the job? What kind of people do I enjoy working with? How will I get along with my co-workers? These are very relevant in the hiring process.
Step 3: Identifying Options, in case the person is not qualified for the position what other openings within the company would this person benefit from. At this point we realize that the skills we are looking for are not found within this person, therefore we may offer another position available to this person that will better suit their personality.
Step 4: Gather information and Data, by this time we realized that we needed to examine the previous information put out for a teaching position, so we decided to request a resume to avoid the hassle of interviews and identify additional information and resources required.
