Introduction:
In our current society, students attend university in order to pursue their goals in life and to enable them to get a great job afterwards. University can be the most exciting thing that ever happens in life as it is another chapter in life and prepare oneself for one’s future career. However, university is different from high school as it is more challenging. Students would be busy with their university courses and often times lack the focus on their studies. Some students tend to skip their quizzes, while other students in university have a tighter schedule like attending more classes for extra credits, as they lack the necessarily credit to pass their courses, and participating in extracurricular activities or clubs the get rid of their stress. By attending to those activities, university students do not have much time to study. In rare cases, some students in university also does internship programs and that take most of their time away which would make their schedule really tight and that they would need to make time to do extra things and also study. Most students in university are experiencing stress due to assignments and the different tests that are given to them. Oftentimes, students tend to get depressed due to their grades getting too low and that more work were given to them. With lower academic grades and too many unfinished work, it would make them overthink which causes depression and leads to sleep deprivation. This journal is going to talk about how sleep deprivation and depression are affecting students in the university.
Todays, student that attend to university are experiencing sleep deprivation and depression due to the assignments and quizzes that were given to them, and it is really important to understand what is happening. As a college student, one must find a solution to every problem in life in order to survive no matter how difficult it is, because it's going to affect one’s future badly, but before getting further into this topic, one must firstly need to know the definition of sleep deprivation and depression.
Sleep is one of the core requirements for human survival, have you ever wonder why getting a good night sleep is important? Scientists have found out that sleeping helps the brain to rest and work properly. while one is sleeping, brain receives enough time to rest and to prepare for the next day. Having a good night sleep helps improve the ability to learn and remember things better than before. Also, it can help one memorize or revise for one’s exam better (Gibbons, 2014). Studies have shown that a good night sleep helps improve learning ability, making one remember things better. A good night sleep not only help one to learn and remember things better but it also helps ones to forget about stress one has been through. Having a good night sleep also play a huge role in the development of happiness. Scientist have discovered that how much one sleep determines our overall happiness. There is a correlation between how much one sleep and how depressed and unhappy one is. The less one sleep, the more one is unhappy or depressed. It misuses our scale of happiness, and if one does not sleep well, mood swings can occur and one would be angry over useless and silly things (Corporation, 2008). According to Gibbons (2014), getting a good quality of sleeps helps one to perform well throughout the day; making one proactive and also helps one do well in class. Sleep not only affects one’s mental health but also one’s physical health. If one did not get enough sleep, one would get sick easily because the lack of sleep would cause the dysfunction of the immune system, while making the body overwork. The body needs rest in order to heal and also helps build up white blood cells which protects the body (Gibbons, 2014).
Sleep deprivation is a situation when one does not get enough sleep or unable to sleep according to Staff (2016), there’s also a side effect of being sleep deprive. Sleep deprivation causes bad eyesight, impeding the nervous system, making it slow and somewhat irresponsive, and can causes memory loss (Healthline, 2005). Sleep deprivation is really bad for your health it can make one sick and can also cause death (Healthline, 2005). Researchers, suggested that that teenager should have at least eight hours to 10 hours of sleep every night (National sleep foundation, 2003). It is not about the quantity of sleep but it is about the quality of sleep as sometimes having 8 hours of sleep does not mean that one is getting enough sleep, only the quantity of sleep is what matters. One might sleep for 8 hours and still would not be satisfied with the quality of sleep one get, while for some others, having only 5 hours of sleep is more satisfying than 8 hours of sleep. Many university students are most likely to sacrifice their sleep to revise for their test or use the time to complete their unfinished assignment, and forget about the importance of sleep and how it can affect the body (Villanova University Student Life, 2013).
