Organizational Behavior
Organizational behavior is the adapted, cultured performance of how an organization behaves on a daily basis. This behavior involves their performance, management style, communication style and any other duties and responsibilities that are involved in keeping the company driving towards success. Organizational behavior (OB) allows individuals within corporations the ability to cultivate an enhanced professional discernment concerning themselves and other individuals they work with. According to our reading in chapter one on OB, it states “OB 9/E is also about how our complex environment challenges people and organizations to change, learn, and continuously develop themselves in the quest for high performance and promising futures”. Overall Organization behavior concerns people; it is about the usual subject matter that now sets apart the current workplace.
Organizational Culture
Organizational culture is the total product of an organization’s creativity and intellectual development at a particular time. Culture in an organization plays an important role in stability and security. Culture helps with the understanding of an organization’s customs, practices, knowledge and beliefs. Organization culture defines an organization’s leadership and in order to understand its leadership, it is a must to first understand its culture. Employees depend on culture for the ability to respond to any situation, culture becomes stone in many organizations, which put fear in employees when change is on the rise or takes place; therefore leaders must take on the role of creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture.
Diversity
Diversity refers to characteristics that make people different from one another. Many of today’s organizations are highly diverse. If effectively managed, diversity can provide the organization with a powerful competitive edge. Diversity stimulates creativity, enhances problem solving by way of offering broader perspectives, and infuses flexibility into the organization. Diversity involves challenges in organizations. Managing Human Resources 4th edition states “Challenges can work to an organization’s advantage, which include genuinely valuing employee diversity, balance individual needs with group fairness, coping with resistance to change, promoting group cohesiveness, ensuring open communication, retaining valued performers, and managing competition for opportunities.” Diversity can well round an organization and allow much of its success. Many well known organizations that drive their company on diversity tend to have top management committed to valuing diversity; which involve ongoing diversity training programs; support groups that nurture nontraditional employees; and policies that accommodate employees’ family needs. They also have senior mentoring and apprenticeship programs to encourage employees’ career progress, set communication standards that discourage discrimination, celebrate diversity through organized activities, use diversity audits to uncover bias, and they hold their managers responsible for effectively implementing diversity policies.
Communication
Roget’s II The New Thesaurus defines communication as “the exchange of ideas by writing, speech, or signals, 2. Something communicated, as information, 3. A situation allowing exchange of ideas or messages”. Communication plays a critical role in an organization as well as in the task-related areas of management.
