“In my public service, I treasure my friendship with law enforcement officers. I admire what they do and support them in every aspect of their job. I have always looked upon law enforcement officers as my friends.”

-Dirk Kempthorne

On one of my first ride alongs as a Junior Police Explorer, I was told that I was “their extra set of eyes”, I was told that I had to watch their back. When I heard the officers say that, I was shocked that they had to be so cautious of their life and their surroundings while they were doing their job. It is sad that in our society today, our law enforcement has to watch their backs while protecting others.

Through my experience as a Junior Police Explorer, I have gained so much respect for police officers. When you dial 911, they are always the first ones there, before the ambulance and before the firefighters. They go out everyday knowing that they could easily not go home that night and it’s all to protect random civilians. When they show up at a call, they have no idea who you are, what you have done, or what you have been through but they are willing to risk their lives for you.

I remember watching a video during one of the Explorer meetings where a wanted suspect pulled out a gun, which they found out later was unloaded. In response, the officer shot the civilian in the leg. Right after the officer shot him, he ran and got his first aid kit and helped the guy who just got done pulling a gun on him. After the video was over, my Explorers officer turns to the group and says, “Even after they threaten us, we are still trying to save them.”
