Women's Crisis in the Future
President Donald Trump raised yet another controversy by signing an executive order on Jan. 23, 2017 reestablish the Mexico City Policy also known as the global gag rule, which prevent international non-governmental organizations that engage or advocate abortions from receiving US government funding. The Mexico City Policy, was originally revealed by President Reagan in 1984 and required nongovernmental organizations to be in unison as a condition of accepting any federal funding that they “would neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations” (CBS). In my opinion, this will lead to more unsafe or illegal abortions, unintended pregnancies and even undermine other global health priorities including STD, such as HIV prevention throughout the world. Developing countries such as China, India, Thailand. are expectantly vulnerable due to lack of advance healthcare services (Pierce).
Trump's decision was described as "catastrophic," since most of the international health organizations rely heavily on US funding to operate (Koran). Under the rules of the Mexico, these organizations deprive woman accessing the information related to family planning and reproductive health options if they have included abortion. " Since most of the people now day know what abortion is, if the policy could be harmful for females in developing countries, who often resort to dangerous methods of abortion when they have shortage access to safer options, such as self-induce abortions or taking pills.
Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement: "Trump's Global Gag Rule will only lead to increases in unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, maternal and newborn deaths." As mentioned above, lots of unintended pregnancies will likely happen due to contraception information being block from women of the developing countries, which leads to even more unsafe abortions and birth complications. Furthermore, a Stanford University study in 2011 states that association between the GGR (Global Gag Rule) and abortion and found that the "Mexico City Policy is associated with increases in abortion rates in sub-Saharan African countries” this might be the result of lack of birth control which leading to increasing unintended pregnancies and abortions rate (GGR).
In addition, The GGR hinder HIV prevention efforts by closing of health clinics and disrupt the distribution the birth control products — leading to reduced approach to condoms and to sexual health services generally. Obviously, participating in sexual related activities without the usage of condoms or other fertility preservation products will increase the risk of contracting STDs. For instance, in Lesotho, some non-governmental organizations are no longer permitted to offer advanced health care services to patient that suffers with HIV (Stoddard).
“In reality, attempts to stop abortion through restrictive laws ― or by withholding family planning aid ― can never eliminate abortion” the reason why the law cannot stop people from getting abortion is those methods do not evict the need for miscarriage (Bassett).
Some religions may view birth control
